Xiaomi Wifi Extender 2 – Review

Xiaomi  has a new wireless range extender that’s not only one of the smallest you’ll find on the market, but is incredibly easy to set up and delivers better coverage. In fact, the Xiaomi Wifi Extender 2 was able to sustain the most throughput at long distance of any wireless range extender.

The Xiaomi Wifi Extender 2 is a Single-band device, operating at 2.4 GHz, with (1T 1R) antennas. It achieves N300-class speeds, with up to 300 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and able to connect up to 16 devices. It’s support Wifi roaming feature: A client detects a better wireless signal and the device will automatically switch over to better signal without disconnecting, then choose the best wireless network to roam on.

LED indicators on the device itself conveniently tells you the connect status of the connection to your existing Wi-Fi network.

It’s easy to extend the range of your existing Wi-Fi network with the Wifi Extender 2, just plug it into a USB adapter (Require 1-Amp), configure from my Xiaomi mi5s to the Wifi Extender 2 using Mi Home app from the Google Playstore.

How we test?

First, we make sure all our devices are installed with latest firmware update.
We tested with ISP: M1 fibre 1Gbps internet speed (Optical Network Terminal > ASUS RT-AC88U).

1st Test: Speedtest M1 server
2nd Test: Internal transfer 500Mb from Xiaomi Wifi extender 2 to ASUSTOR AS6204T

Below is the floor plan of the 3 room HDB flat.

The speedtest result can’t achieve max link speed of 144Mbps. However, benchmark shows 42.32Mbps download and 30.23Mbps upload speed is enough for streaming video and download file. We can’t complain too much with a SGD $6 dollars Wifi Extender.

On the 2nd test we did a internal file transfer from Macbook to NAS.

The new GUI is based on the popular Angular framework and the FreeNAS team expects the GUI to be themeable and feature complete by 11.1. The new GUI follows the same flow as the existing GUI, but looks better. For now, the FreeNAS team has released it in beta form to get input from the FreeNAS community. The new GUI, as well as the classic GUI, are selectable from the login screen.

Also new in FreeNAS 11 is an Alert Service page which configures the system to send critical alerts from FreeNAS to other applications and services such as Slack, PagerDuty, AWS, Hipchat, InfluxDB, Mattermost, OpsGenie, and VictorOps. FreeNAS 11.0 has an improved Services menu that adds the ability to manage which services and applications are started at boot.

Max-Q is a term borrowed from aerospace engineering and is hugely important for the design of rockets launched into space. At liftoff, velocity of a rocket is 0, but air density is very high. As it gains altitude, velocity keeps increasing, but air density keeps decreasing. Max-Q is the balance point of velocity and air density when the aerodynamic stress on the rocket is at its maximum.

 

For the Space Shuttle, this typically occurs at an altitude of ~35,000 ft. (11 km) at around a minute into the launch. Space faring rockets are precision-engineered for Max-Q; the balanced point of velocity and air density for which it has been designed.

ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* lens, the new RX10 IV model delivers an unmatched combination of mobility and speed for imaging enthusiasts and professionals looking for the ultimate ‘all-in-one’ solution.

The impressive RX10 IV camera is equipped with a latest 1.0-type 20.1 MP[6] Exmor RS CMOS stacked image sensor with DRAM chip along with a powerful BIONZ X™ image processor and front-end LSI.  These key components all work together to maximise overall speed of operation and performance, ultimately ensuring the highest possible image and video quality throughout the entire range of the 24-600mm4 lens.

Fast Focusing, Fast Shooting

A first for Sony’s RX10 series of cameras, the new RX10 IV model features a Fast Hybrid AF system that combines the respective advantages of 315 phase-detection AF points covering approximately 65% of the sensor and contrast-detection AF to ultimately enable the camera to lock focus in as little as 0.03 seconds2.  This high speed focusing complements the extensive 24-600mm4 range of the lens, ensuring all subjects can be captured with precise detail and clarity.

 

Additionally, for the first time in a Cyber-shot camera, the RX10 IV model employs High-density Tracking AF technology.  This advanced technology, which had only been previously available in a select few of Sony’s acclaimed line of α interchangeable lens cameras, concentrates AF points around a subject to improve tracking and focus accuracy, allowing even the most unpredictable subjects including fast-moving athletes and birds in flight to be captured with ease.

 

Other AF improvements in the new RX10 IV camera include an enhanced version of the popular Eye AF, Touch Focus and Focus Range Limiter[7].  AF-ON setting is also assignable, as well as multiple AF modes including AF-S, AF-C and AF-A, which can be easily adjusted based on user preferences and shooting situations.

 

An ideal complement to the AF system, the RX10 IV offers continuous high-speed shooting at up to 24 fps3 with full AF/AE tracking, with an impressive buffer limit of up to 249 images[8].  With the significant improvements in processing power for the new camera, EVF display lag during continuous shooting has been substantially reduced, allowing shooters to capture the decisive moment with ultimate confidence. Also, for convenience during image playback, continuously shot images can be displayed in groups instead of individual shots.

 

The RX10 IV also has a high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum shutter speed of up to 1/32000 second) that reduces the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects, and can shoot completely silently in all modes, including continuous high speed shooting, when electronic shutter is engaged.  A mechanical shutter mode is also available as well if required by the user.

ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm F2.4-F4 Lens

The 24-600mmiv ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* lens on the Cyber-shot RX10 IV camera features a large maximum aperture of F2.4-F4.0, helping it achieve outstanding image quality throughout the entire zoom range, all the way up to ultra-telephoto.  It includes a super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element and ED aspherical lenses to minimise chromatic aberration, and ZEISS® T* Coating to minimise flare and ghosting.

 

The lens also has built-in Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilisation that helps to reduce camera shake and image blur.  When the feature is activated, it is equivalent to an approximate 4.5 steps shutter speed improvement.

 

Additionally, with a minimum focusing distance of 72 cm (2.36 ft) and 0.49x maximum magnification at a fully extended 600mm, the lens is capable of producing amazingly detailed tele-macro images.

 

Professional Video Capture

The new RX10 IV becomes the latest Cyber-shot RX camera to offer the advantages of 4K (QFHD 3840 x 2160) movie recording, with its Fast Hybrid AF system realising approximately 2x faster focusing speed compared to the RX10 III.

In 4K mode, the new RX10 IV utilises full pixel readout without pixel binning, capturing approximately 1.7x more information than is required for 4K movie output to ensure that all the finest details are captured accurately. The camera utilises the XAVC S™ [9] codec, recording video at a high data rate of up to 100 Mbps depending on shooting mode.  Users have the option of shooting at either 24p or 30p in 4K mode (100 Mbps), or in frame rates of up to 120p in Full HD mode.

 

The new camera also has a variety of other professional calibre video features including Picture Profile, S-Log3/S-Gamut3, Gamma Display Assist, Proxy recording, Time Code / User Bit and more, as well as input for external microphone and output for headphone monitoring.

 

Super slow motion[10] video recording is also available, with an extended duration of about 4 seconds (in quality priority mode) and 7 seconds (in shoot time priority).  This unique feature gives users the ability to choose among 1000fps, 500fps and 250fps frame rates and among 50p, 25p and 24p playback formats11.

 

Upgraded Operation and Customisation

The new RX10 IV features Sony’s latest 3.0-type 1.44M dot tiltable LCD screen with Touch Focus and Touch Pad function – another first for the Cyber-shot RX series – for quick and smooth focusing operation, and WhiteMagic™ technology, ensuring that LCD viewing is bright and clear in even the harshest outdoor lighting conditions. Additionally, it is equipped with an approx. 2.35M dot high-contrast XGA OLED Tru-Finder™, ensuring true-to-life image preview and playback functionality. Triple lens rings for aperture, zoom and focus are also available, with a completely quiet, smooth option for the aperture ring that is ideal for video shooters.

 

 

 

To enhance customisation, “My Menu” functionality has been added, allowing up to 30 frequently used menu items to be custom registered. Menus are colour coded for easier recognition and navigation, and a new Movie Settings menu has been introduced to improve the overall video shooting experience.

 

The RX10 IV is also dust and moisture resistant [11] , and Wi-Fi®, NFC™ and Bluetooth® compatible.

Windows Shell Improvements

  • We fixed an issue where minimized app windows on mixed-DPI monitor setups might end up drawing offscreen after your PC resumed from sleep.
  • We fixed an issue where if you changed your display language preference to something other than the machine’s default then any app which did not take an update while also getting the updated language resource package from the Store would end up continuing to display its tile in Start in that default language rather than the new language displayed within the app and other system UI.
  • We’ve updated the Action Center to now use “AM” / “PM” when indicating timestamp with the 12hr clock format, rather than “a” / “p”.
  • We fixed an issue where using the letters in Start to jump to different locations in the alphabet wasn’t consistently working in the last few flights.
  • We fixed an issue where when the People button was present in taskbar, and toast-only banners (for example from Outlook 2016) were sent, the Action Center badge counter would become inaccurate.

Microsoft Edge Improvements

  • We fixed an issue resulting in multiple apps crashing in the previous flight if you tried to log into the app using Facebook.
  • We fixed an issue where pasting an image to Imgur.com from your clipboard wouldn’t work.
  • We fixed an issue which could result in uploads failing on some sites, such as Behance.net.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in drag and drop onto websites intermittently not working.
  • We fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge would crash after choosing to pin certain websites to Start.
  • We fixed an issue where a tab could get in a state where it displayed a tab preview thumbnail even though your mouse wasn’t hovering over the tab.
  • We fixed an issue where website tooltips could end up displaying behind the Microsoft Edge window after opening a link in new tab in the background.
  • We fixed an issue for certain websites where after watching an embedded video full screen then using Esc to return to the page would result in the video controller no longer being visible.
  • We’ve updated editable fields in PDFs to now have a subtle color to help indicate that they’re editable.

Gaming Improvements

  • We fixed an issue resulting in Ghost Recon: Wildlands not starting in recent flights since the Easy anti-cheat component wouldn’t load.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Train Simulator 2017 failing to launch on recent flights.

Input Improvements

  • We fixed an issue where the Pinyin IME’s emoji picker wouldn’t load in recent flights.
  • We fixed an issue where the Emoji Panel’s tooltips could become mixed up.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in precision touchpads potentially dropping gestures after coming out of sleep.
  • We’ve made some adjustments to address an issue resulting in sudden and brief CPU spikes where you couldn’t move your mouse. If you’ve encountered this, please try it in this new build and let us know if your experience has improved.
  • We fixed an issue where when using the Chinese (Simplified) handwriting panel InputPersonalization.exe could get into a state where it would unexpectedly have a continually high CPU usage.

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

  • We’ve updated the Run dialog so when hold Ctrl + Shift then click OK or press enter, it will run that task or program elevated, just like how it works in Cortana.
  • We fixed an issue where the Windows Defender Security Center app icon was missing in taskbar when the app was open, as well in Start’s all apps list. You will also notice that the icon is now un-plated in the taskbar.
  • We fixed the issue where USBhub.sys was causing spontaneous reboots due to bugchecks (GSOD).
  • We fixed an issue where the battery flyout might incorrectly show “PC not charging” while the device was changing in recent builds.

Android Security Patch – September 2017 Update

Google notes it has been split in two, with 30 specific issues fixed in the September 1 dated patch, with 51 more bugs resolved in the September 5 patch.  The most critical bug was with an issue that could “enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process” on an Android device. The most severe of all issues patched included a critical vulnerability in the media framework. The newest security update patches 81 CVEs and vulnerabilities.

Thirteen of these are critical vulnerabilities coming from the Media framework, Wi-Fi driver (Broadcom components), networking subsystem (Kernel components), and LibOmxVenc (Qualcomm components). Most, if not all, of these vulnerabilities, allowed remote attacks which executed arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process. We also have around 43 high-severity vulnerabilities coming from all sectors except for the Android system itself. And the 25 remaining vulnerabilities are of moderate severity.
